You Voted - Serendipty Bars
The votes came in and Serendipty Bars were chosen for Mom's night. The recipe sounded exciting - 3 layers of cookie, caramel pecan, and chocolate silk, with a bit of magic that would reverse the layers. Cool, right? So I set to work.
I underestimated the time needed - these take forever! Each layer is mixed separately and then baked off one at a time, layering as you go. Each layer took around 25-35 minutes to bake! The recipe book promised it would be worth the effort, though. As I got to the last layer, pouring a caramel-oatmeal-pecan layer over the top, I got excited to see the magic. Supposedly, in the oven, the caramel layer and the chocolate layer would magically switch places! Alas... it never happened. No, as I stared at the confection through the oven, I saw nothing happen except the caramel get darker and darker as I waited. Finally, I had to pull it out so it wouldn't burn. So disappointing!
But did the taste save the day? Not really. I was pretty disappointed. These were really really sweet with not much depth of flavor. The best part was the caramel layer, but it was kinda lost in the overly sweet chocolate layer. The moms seemed to like them, as did my husband, but this is one recipe definitely NOT worth the trouble.
